Research and Planning: Magazine Layout

This film magazine is Empire. As you can see the layout of this magazine appears quite clustered and definitely takes advantage of all the space given from the cover. The strip across the cover of the magazine is something I won't be using myself, however I do like the technique as it causes the information being said to stand to attention. As a result of the size of the fonts and the positioning of the font, we are aware that the main subject of this issue of the magazine is going to be Harry Potter, I will take this into consideration and try and position my subject in a place where it will attract the most attention.

Once again this magazine, being Empire, fully takes advantage of the space on offer. The medium close up covers the majority of the cover, and almost completely covers the middle of the masthead. Again with the font and positioning of the font we are fully aware that the main subject is going to be Trainspotting. On either side of the picture there is a cover line, the cover lines on this cover don't really attract that much attention as the writing under the title is quite small and a skinny font, meaning it doesn't stand out as much as the rest. However this could be purposely done, as it isn't the information underneath that needs to attract the attention instead it is the main cover line. This shall be taken into consideration when it comes to the progress of my magazine.

This magazine takes a different approach than the previous two, as this is Total Film and so therefore has a completely different layout. Instead of having the medium close up sent to the front of the masthead, they have instead sent it to the back and had the featured content cover the picture. We are again made aware of the main subject through the colour and font of the 'Star Trek' and so it is this which attracts our attention. The colour on this magazine works really well together and sticks to the 3 colour rule, things I will be able to take from this magazine will include the positioning of the cover lines and the colour scheme.

This magazine is completely different to the rest of the magazines, it doesn't fill the space on offer and leaves a lot of space untouched. They have chosen to position all of the cover lines on the left hand side of the cover and push the medium long shot slightly to the right of the cover, the main subject of the cover also isn't that big and won't really attract as much attention as the masthead of the magazine will do. Overall I think this is my least favourable magazine layout of all 4.

Research and Planning: Film Magazine to date

This is the beginning of my film magazine, as you can see I have stuck to the 3 colour rule that I had previously decided on, which was red black and white. I have made the masthead stand out fully in red on the black background, I also stuck with the font which I decided on, being American Captain, I also stuck with the font I Still Know for 'The Retribution' film title. So far I have interpreted one coverline; the additions positioned at the bottom of the cover, the positioning statement, which I positioned underneath the masthead to make it fully aware that it actually is a positioning statement. Next I plan to add a picture of the main character at a medium close up at the centre of the page, it shall also overlap the masthead slightly as I have noticed this is what is commonly done with many other film magazines. The other coverlines will be positioned to the right and left of the picture and will be in a font I think is most suitable and fitting to the rest of the magazine. Overall I want the look of this magazine to be quite an organised look yet make it appear more informal to attract a wider audience market.

Research and Planning: Potential Taglines for our Film Trailer

The idea behind this collection of film taglines is that the title of 'Retribution' ultimately represents the aspect of revenge. In our trailer the possessed girl is taking revenge on her group of friends as a result of them making her an outcast and neglecting her from their social group. Therefore to keep the tagline in touch with the title we have tried to interpret the word revenge or something that closely relates, our favorable tagline at the moment is 'no sweeter revenge' this is because, it seems quite sinister and emphasizes the strange and eerie aspect of the horror genre. The least favorable tagline is 'nothing sweeter' this is because it doesn't really have the full impact that the others have due to it being short and not giving that much away. It also isn't very clear that the tagline is the horror genre, this could mean anything, it could easily be the tagline for a child's film not a horror.

Research and Planning: Existing Film Magazine

Empire
This magazine was first issued in 1989 and since then it has been issued every month at a price of £3.99. The typical things which you may find inside an Empire magazine are reviews, the nominees of the rewards which they host (named the Empire awards, voted by readers), film news, previews etc. A unique selling point of this magazine is that it sometimes features a classic scene, basically being a transcript from a film that will be easily recognised due to its popularity.

Sight & Sound
This film magazine is independent and is produced by the British Film Institute. It was first published in 1932 and since then it has been published every month. As a result of it being independent magazine it features much more the Arthouse type of film as oppose to the conglomerate films which feature in Empire. Typical things to find inside of the Sight & Sound magazine would include reviews, upcoming films, film news etc. The unique selling point of this magazine is that every ten years, Sight & Sound ask film professionals to vote on their favourite films of all time. They will then publish their findings and results in a special issue of the magazine.

Total Film
This magazine was first issued in 1997 and since then has been issued every 4 weeks, at the price of £3.99. The things which could be found in each issue of this magazine the audience is offered full range interviews, photo shoots, film previews and interviews with actors and directors. This magazine is seen to be in the shadow of Empire and has been the second biggest selling film magazine in Britain for many years. The unique selling point of this film is that it has a parody page ,which mocks a recent release.

Research and Planning: Organisation of Filming through technology

These are some of the messages between myself and my group, arranging which dates we plan to film the trailer. Also discussing the mise en scene of the trailer, and what is going to be needed in order to film.

Research and Planning: I Show U, Me Working

This is just a quick I Show U video sampling some of the work which is done on the computers. I begin with uploading my prezi and show you how I would do that, throughout the video there are some mistakes made during the garage band, meaning there are small faults which are shortly sorting out, so then I could continue on doing my work. I also showed how I have done a short sound clip on garage and how I have chosen instruments and sounds which benefit my genre most.

Research & Planning: Sound Practice on Garage Band

This is just a short sound clip which I have just created as a form of practice for my score for my film I am making. I added sounds which I thought would sound quite scary therefore I added, orchestral strings, grand piano and big electric lead. Together I tried to make the sound create some suspense, which I think this sound did by being slow paced ad not too jumpy.

Research & Planning: Cover Lines for Film Magazine

Within this Prezi, I presented five possible cover line stories which could potentially appear on the front cover of my film magazine, each of these alongside the main subject of the magazine, which is my film 'The Retribution'. I may choose to alter some of these cover lines depending on whether I think the story is suiting to the final result of the film magazine, and whether it looks reasonable to the genre of the magazine.

Research and Planning: Plan for the Week

  • Cover lines for film magazine
  • I Show U
  • Practice on garage band
  • More Social Network research
  • Film Magazine layout examples

Research & Planning: Trailer improvements

After completing our mock trailer with the footage we recorded, we looked over our trailer and gathered feedback from the audience. From this research we have found that the improvements needed to be made mostly include presenting the narrative of the trailer in a much better way. We have thought that we could do this by maybe adding some additional clips, or titles and a voice over to explain what is happening throughout the trailer. Other improvements we plan to make, include filming the rest and deleting the animatic storyboard from the first draft of the trailer. We also plan to add some more sound, and making it match clearly to the trailer. We finally plan to add some more editing transitions as at the moment we don't really have that many included.

Research & Planning: Feedback from trailer.

After showing our rough copy of our trailer to the rest of our group, we gathered information in regards to what the audience thought the narrative was, what they thought the strong parts of the trailer was and any improvements that they could possibly suggest to make our trailer better. The feedback is overall very important to our group, as we want to interpret all the feedback we have been given, therefore making the experience of the trailer much more effective on the audience.

Research and Planning: Trailer to date

We are yet to film the beginning of the trailer, where the students of the trailer are moving into the student home, with this they will have excessive mise en scene of luggage and other stereotypical equipment which is related to students. Other scenes yet to record are the news report and the ending of the murders, the sound also needs to be added to these scenes.

Research and Planning: Successful Auditions.

http://katrinaandersona2media.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/research-and-planning-successful.html

The video was unavailable to me at this time, however I have the link to the video which I would have been uploading from a member of my group. The reasons these audition were successful was due to the confidence they displayed on screen and the time that they was willing to give us in order to film our trailer.

Research and Planning: Risk Assessment for Trailer & Photoshoot

The risk assessment for the trailer and the pictures we will be needing for the poster and magazine will remain the same as they are all shot on the same location. The equipment used, including the SLR and video camera both use the same power charge meaning that the potential hazards remain the same, all potential hazards are noted in this risk assessment.

Research and Planning: Film Poster to date

This is a starter of the film magazine which I am making for my film, The Retribution. So far I have used the font I Still Know for my film title, tag line (which is still undecided) and the coming soon sign. I think so far the colours are working quite well, as the red has implications of the horror genre and the white causes the poster not too look too clustered and keeps it quite organised. I used the steel tongs font in order to have the production and distribution presented really well. I have yet to do a picture for the poster, I plan to have a medium close up, or a close up in the centre of the poster, this depends on which one looks better when the poster is completed. The tag line is also still to be decided.

Research and Planning: Shooting Schedule

Research and Planning: Unsuccessful Auditions

Research & Planning: Film Poster Font

This font is called No Fear, it is really suiting to the horror genre due to the gothic look it has. This font if used on my poster, will be colored red to make it appear much more of the horror genre. It would also make it look like it is written with blood, that is the effect I would like to go for with this font.

This font is called Friday 13th. I think it is quite suiting to the horror genre, as a result of the italic gothic writing. However, I don't think this truly represents the narrative of the trailer, and I also don't think it would attract great attention as it appears quite stereotypical and seen before.

This font is called I Still Know, I like this font as it looks like it relates to the narrative and would attract attention whilst letting people know that it is a horror genre. The color of this font looks fine black, yet because of my color rule on my poster I think I may have to change the color in order to match and look good with the rest of the poster.

Research & Planning: Magazine Font

This font is called American Captain, I like this font as it is bold and will stand out and grab the attention of our target audience. I also think it is suiting to the film magazine genre.

This font is called Titania-Regular, this font appealed to me because of the pattern, it isn't that bold however I do think that that it will still attract an audience, although due to the font they may be confused as to the genre of the magazine.

This font is called Showtime, I think this font directly relates to the film genre, as it is stereotypical for being displayed outside a cinema, I think without the light bulbs around the font it would look slightly better than the full image, although I think the bulbs add an attraction value.

This font is called Verve, I like this font as it is skinny yet attractive. I think it is quite suiting to the film genre, as it looks serious and doesn't look like it is targeted at children yet looks like it suitable to be targeted at my target age.

Research and Planning: Horror images

On my Tumblr.com account I have searched in the search bar "horror images" in an attempt to get new images that wouldn't be found on google, to give me some inspiration for my trailer and design for the poster and magazine.

This picture appears a bit extravagant for our horror trailer due to the resources we have, however I like the eyes on this picture as she clearly looks like a demon, I think this effect could be recreated on photoshop. This has influenced both my magazine and poster.

This picture is from the orphan and it is a still from the film. What I like about this picture is that the make up is messed up and the character appears quite annoyed, this offers some reasoning behind the horror in the film, therefore I may use this when it comes to shooting my pictures.

In this picture I particularly liked the blood, I don't think the teeth would be appropriate for our trailer as it seems to imply that this character is almost a vampire of some kind, whereas our character is possessed. I think I could use the blood on the face of our character, yet not round the mouth as I don't want to imply that our character is a cannibal.

This picture I simply liked because of the shot type I think its different than the traditional medium close up or close up that is used often on posters. I also like the black and white effect as well as the eyes looking all blacked out. I may use this shot type on my poster yet not my magazine as I think the magazine would look too compact.

Research and Planning: Magazine Drafts

This magazine cover is just a rough draft, but I plan to have it much more filled and try to avoid having a lot of spare space on the page. The masthead will also take up a lot more room, however the picture will remain a close up and have the gothic look that this picture also does. I think this magazine will attract an audience as a result of the large masthead which shall be in a bold colour, I also think that the close up picture will also attract an audience, as well as informing the audience which genre this edition of the magazine will pay focus too.

This magazine cover I think is more appealing as a draft to the first. This is a result of having a lot more detail on this cover and I also think it has a lot more attractive features including the two pictures which shall be on the cover of the magazine. I also think the fact there is a lot more stories on the front of this magazine is an appealing and informative feature to this magazine. The picture is going to remain at a medium close up, yet still have a lot of gothic features and additions through mise en scene of the model. By this I mean the messy hair, make up and clothing. The masthead will attract attention through being a bold colour and a big size.

Research and Planning: Location Recce

This is the location recce discussing where we have chosen to film our trailer. We decided that our main location is going to be in a house, this is most suiting to the narrative due to the fact that they're students and we are trying to convey them moving into their new home, and using stereotypes to emphasize the fact it is a student home. We have also discussed lighting and the types of lighting which we think will be most effective, we have also including things such as hazards, power information and sound.

Research and Planning: Shot List

This is the shot list, containing information about the shot type which we have chosen to use and the reasons behind making these choices. We have tried to decide which shot type will benefit our narrative at the particular point in the trailer, giving the best effect and making an overall better trailer.

Research and Planning: Soundtrack to avoid

The soundtrack at the beginning of this trailer is the kind of sounds I plan to avoid, this is mainly because I don't want to fool the audience by the audio played, I want them to be fully aware they're going to be watching a horror movie, however when the trailer progresses I do like the constant banging which lasts a few seconds, and the backdrop to that sound, which sounds something like a high-hat.

Research and Planning: Costume & Props for Film Poster

PROPS

Fake Blood is going to be used to make the model look much more horrific and scary, I plan to put the fake blood on the models face and clothing to make it appear as though they have just done their first attack, just like in the trailer.

The knife is just an idea, meaning I don't know whether I'm going to definitely interpret this into my poster. Although, I personally think the knife would be a good touch as it adds emphasis on the killing situation, yet takes away from the idea of possession, it is this which puts me off using it.

COSTUME

This white nightgown, I think will look best on the model yet it shall be covered in blood with some rips, making it appear quite wrecked and ragged, to convey the impression that the girl who has been possessed, has literally just been possessed and this is the image we are presented with at the front of the poster. The poster will have a medium long shot of the model, this way we are able to see the extent of the possession.

Research and Planning: Soundtrack to Inspire

The non diegetic sound which begins this trailer, is very similar to how I see the sound on my trailer being. The pianos being at a very slow pace I think create a great sense of suspense, I also think that just having the pianos is a great effect, due to not having too many instruments, it stops the trailer becoming distracting and causes the audience to focus on what's happening on screen. As oppose to the sound and what's happening outside of the narrative. On this trailer the beginning of the sound only lasts a few seconds and then cuts straight into dialogue, this however is something that I will try to avoid doing, due to the length of this trailer being a lot longer than my teaser trailer is going to be. The non diegetic mood music then continues on, once again sticking to a piano however this time it is a much higher note, throughout this trailer it is stereotypical horror sounds, my inspiration can come from this, when thinking of a piano and the decision of which keys I will choose to play and which is most suiting to my specific genre and narrative. The higher percentage of sound from this trailer comes from the dialogue, I won't be using this as our trailer is only a teaser trailer and we have chosen to stick too more non diegetic sound, as in our opinion it is a lot more creepy. Overall I think the best things to take inspiration from in regards to this trailer, would be the lack of instruments to create a better effect, and the diegetic sounds used including the screams and the radio, again stereotypical conventions for a horror genre.

Research and Planning: Auditions Poster

This is a simple poster which will be stuck around the college in order to attract people, predominantly drama students, who would like to star or appear in our trailer. On this poster I have interpreted ways in which to contact us (room a2) and who needs to be contacted (me, Kat or Sophie). I have made it apparent that the genre is horror through the picture and the font of the title of the film.

Research and Planning: Test Shots

This test shot is a medium close up of a high angle, this shot will be used to express a sense of power from one character over another, therefore placing the other character in a very vulnerable position and almost seem feeble and weak.

This is a long shot from a low angle. This shot will be used when we want to represent a vulnerable character and when representing a character who is in power of somebody else by looking down on them. The long shot will be helpful to fully emphasise the mise en scene, and whether there are any correlations between this and the power position of the character.

This shot is a close up, however when using a close up we plan to have the actress is full front of the camera making us able to see her fully. This will be used when we want to represent that the girl is now possessed, the idea of the close up will hopefully frighten the audience and make them realise the extent of the full possession.

This shot is a medium close up at eye level, this will be used again to show that the character is possessed or being attacked by the deranged girl in the house. By having the medium close up this means we are also able to see the mise en scene a bit more, so we can take advantage of this and maybe put the actress in a bloody robe to show that someone has just been killed.

This shot is a long shot at eye level, this will be used to give more of an audience effect to creep them out more. This again gives a full expression of the mise en scene and making either the victims or the possessed girl to be fully conveyed through their surroundings.

This is a long shot at a canted angle, this will be used when an attack is about to occur, as it makes the screen appear much more unusual and will be a good representation of what is occurring on the screen at this time. Once again the mise en scene will play a part as there is a lot of space in the framing to take advantage off.

This is a birds eye shot of the character, this would be good to get a full view of what is happening within a scene, and we will also be able to see things we wouldn't necessarily see on other shots. We plan to use this shot as the possession is taking place, therefore we have to be careful with what is on the screen, so that the full effect is achieved successfully.
