Research and Planning: Film Magazine Analysis 2

- This film magazine is Empire which is a film magazine which is conglomerate and known worldwide. This magazine isn't horror specific like Gorezone was, however this magazine cover definitely has horror connotations for the story inside.

- This magazines house style sticks with the 3 colour rule that of red black and white. Each of these colours have great connotations for the horror genre as the red shows death and blood, the black shows fright and darkness and the white has connotations of purity which is sometimes involved in a horror film for a passive character. The white is in small doses though, meaning that purity may be minimal in this film.

- The image on the cover of this magazine is a close up, however half of the image is shadowed hiding the left eye and creating a sense of mystery and emphasising the horror genre. As does the fact that the characters eye is red and wide eyed, catching attention of the audience. The facial expression appears to have quite a creepy raised smile, making the actor appear quite psychotic.

- The masthead of the magazine is red and positioned in the stereotypical area of the magazine which all mastheads are placed. The font is the biggest on the page making it apparent that is a film magazine as oppose to a poster. The colour red is also a good choice as a result of the connotations of horror which it carries.

- We can tell that this magazine is a magazine and not a film poster due to these stereotypical features which we can see:

  • Bar Code
  • Bullet Points
  • Date and Price
  • Quotes
  • Masthead
  • Other featured stories
- The target audience of the Empire magazine ranges from 16-30 however this specific magazine as it has a featured horror front cover would appeal more to the horror lovers which usually ranges from 16-20 year olds.
